Richard Sanford was born in Westmoreland County about 1672. He was the son of the immigrant Robert Sanford.

Richard married Susannah Franklin and they had nine children.

Richard wrote his will on July 25th, 1757. He was able to sign his own name. Richard left his whole estate to his wife Susannah during her widowhood. He gave to his son Richard Junior the plantation where he lived. He gave to his granddaughter Susannah Sanford, daughter of Edward, 15 pounds of current money. Richard left to Edward another plantation in Westmoreland containing 200 acres. He left 1,000 pounds of tobacco to his daughter Ann. Richard also left varying sums of money to his many children and grandchildren. His will also names several slaves and identifies which of his heirs received which slave and which slaves should be sold to pay off the debts of his estate. Richard named his three sons, Richard, Robert and Edward to be the executors of his estate.

Richard's will was proven in Westmoreland County Court on October 30th, 1759.
