Nancy took over the family farm and slaves after her husband unexpectedly died.

Nancy Ann Haynie was born March 8, 1819 in Lancaster County, VA to Hiram Haynie (1792-1855) and Rebbecca Rogers (1799-1861). Her birth date was taken from the Bush Family Bible.

Nancy Ann married Urbane Bush Bush on January 20th, 1847 in Richmond County. Security on the bond by Yarret Haynie and witnessed by Joseph HarynieHe was the son of Thomas Bush (1785-1848) and Tomsey Thomas.

Nancy A. and Urbane appear together on the 1850 census along with 2 year old Robert E. Bush. Nancy Ann is marked as being unable to read or write. Urbane works as a carpenter and has real estate valued at $900. This census shows them in Lancaster County, no locality is stated but this is likely at the Bush Home-place near Alfonso. Urbane was a slave holder and appears on the 1850 slave schedule. He owned a 30 year old female, 12 year old male, 8 year old female and 10 month old female.

Also in 1850 Urbane Bush is listed on the Agricultural Schedule. No acreage is mentioned, but it does show that they owned a horse, a milking cow, four work oxen, 2 other cattle and 10 hogs. His livestock was valued at $165. Their farm produced twenty bushels of iris h potatoes and twenty bushels of sweet potatoes as well as 100 pounds of butter. The value of animals slaughtered in the past year was $86.

Urbane was accidentally shot in late August of 1859 and passed away on September the 8th. It is unknown who accidentally shot him, or if he did it himself. He was probably buried on their farm.

The census of 1860 lists Ann as the head of the family and as a farmer with land worth $2,000 and a personal estate valued at $1,985. All four children are listed with her. Also living in the home L. A. Hazzard a 22 year old female who works in the house. She also appears on the 1860 slave schedule holding four slaves - a 50 year old male, 42 year old female, 6 year old male and 4 year old female. There are two houses designated for slaves.

The 1870 census lists Nancy Ann's son Robert at age 22 as the head of the family and as a farmer with land worth $1,500 and a personal estate of $250. The three younger daughters are still at home too; ages 19, 14 and 11.

Nancy Ann died on October 29th, 1872. She is probably buried near her husband on the farm. Nancy's date of death is taken from a claim that her son Robert filed in her name when acting as her administrator. Robert applied to the Southern Claims Comission for reimbursement of $238.75 for goods taken from Nancy's household by Union Soldiers during the Civil War. Robert claimed that one horse valued at $200, a shotgun worth $20 and 75 pounds of bacon valued at 25 cents per pound had been seized by US Cavalry troops under the command of General Kirpatrick in June or July 1863. The claim was refused.
