Moses Hale, Jr.

Show Family Line Moses Hale >> Zepporah Hale >> Orah Lewis >> Marvin George >> Maida George

Moses was a farmer in Northumberland and Richmond Counties. He served the CSA as a member of the 15th VA Cavalry.

Moses Hale, Jr. was born in Northumberland County about 1817. His parents were Moses Hale, Sr. and Margaret Headley. When Moses, Sr. died in 1837 he left to Moses "The tract of land I now live on containing 55 acres."

Moses married Nancy Sydnor on December 17th, 1838. There is an entry in the 1840 census for Northumberland County that shows Moses Hale as the head of a family. The record shows eight people in the household. It could have been Moses and Nancy along with some siblings or parents living with them.

The 1850 census is a clearer record. It shows the family in the Farnham Parish area of Richmond County. Moses works as a farmer, his real estate worth $135. His wife name is given as Ann, she is marked unable to read or write. The four children are marked as born in Richmond County.

In 1860 the family is still in Richmond County near the Stony Hill post office. Moses is still a farmer, his real estate is worth $500 and his personal property $300.

During the Civil War Moses enlisted first with the 41st Virginia Militia and in November of 1861 with the 15th VA Cavalry, known as the Northern Neck Rangers. His enlistment was supposed to be for one year but the last records I have found are for February of 1862. It does not appear he was in any battles. He is noted on one muster roll as being "sick and unfit for service." In November 1861 he was noted as being on detached service from his unit, "getting boats from the water." His wife Nancy died about 1864, if she became ill during the war it may explain why Moses did not fill the term of his enlistment.

The 1870 census shows 53 year old Moses together with 21 year old Georgeanna Hale and two children recently being born, Lily (1866) and Obediah (1869). Zepporah and Jepthoh are still living with their father too. They are in Richmond County near the Warsaw post office. He is listed as a farmer. His real estate is worth $200 and personal property $100.

I have not been able to find any more records for Moses Hale after the 1870 census including death records.
