Little is known of the early life of Joseph Bryant. He may have been born in Richmond County and may have been a son of Thomas Bryant. The North Farnham Parish Register shows that a Thomas Bryant was born July 12th, 1688 to Thomas and Elizabeth and that three men named Thomas Bryant died in 1726, 1737 and 1741.

The North Farnham Parish Register does not show a birth for Joseph Bryant but does list six children born to Joseph and Judith Bryant between 1749 and 1762. The next known record for Joseph is his death. He died October 6th, 1763 without a will and possibly at a young age (although some unsourced family trees give his year of birth as 1714). Court orders dated May 8th, 1764 granted administration of his estate to Gabriel Smithers. On June 4th Smithers along with Meal Scurlock and Peter Goad were ordered to take an inventory of the estate of Joseph Bryant which was carried out on June 30th. The inventory and appraisal were returned and recorded by the Richmond County court on July 2nd, 1764.

Among the contents of his inventory was livestock including cows and sheep, shoemaker tools, carpentry tools, and a spinning wheel. The value of the inventoried goods was 24 pounds, 9 shillings and 2 1/2 pence.

Soon after his death his oldest son, Jonathan, entered into an apprenticeship to learn the trade of tailor.
