John was a sailor from Accomack Couty.

John P. Barnes was born on September 25th, 1820 in Accomack County to Parker Barnes and Elizabeth Taylor. The "P" in his name may have stood for Parker. His headstone spells Barnes as Barns, but is wife's adjacent stone uses the "E" and says "Wife of John Barnes."

John married Sallie Justice about 1847. Unsourced Family Trees on Ancestry.com give the date as January 25th, 1847.

John and Sallie appear in the 1850 census in Accomack Parish, Accomack, VA. The family listed above them is headed by a Parker Barnes that is the right age to probably be John's father. The census form appears to say "John Barnes of P." John's occupation is listed as a sailor with real estate valued at $500. Sallie is noted as not being able to read or write. Sons William J., age 2, and John E., age 4 months, are listed on this census. Also living with the family is 10 year old boy named Taylor Thoragood.

On the 1860 census John's name is listed as "John P. Barnes." They are still in Accomack Parish, Accomack County, and the Post Office is Metompkin. He is still working as a sailor and the value of his real estate has grown to $1,700. Sallie's name is spelled "Sally" and she is not marked as being unable to read or write this time. Children listed are; William J. 13, John E. 11, Edward P. 9, Mary E. 7, Virginia 5, Isaiah T. 3 and Arinthia 2 months. Also living with them is Elizabeth Lewis, aged 21.

The 1870 census shows the family in Metompkin township of Accomack County served by the Modest Town Post Office. John still works as a sailor, his real estate is valued at $1,200 and personal estate at $1,000. Sallie is again noted as not being able to read or write. Sons William John are both working as sailors too. Edward, age 18, is working as a farm laborer. The four younger children are all still in school. An eighth child has been born since the last census, Sadie, age 6. Also living with them is Middleton Revel or Revere, age 23, a sailor.

John P. Barnes died December 17th, 1878. The county Death Register lists his cause of death as Consumption and gives his age at death as 57 years 2 months and 23 days. His parents were also listed on the record as Parker Barns and Betsy. His occupation was given as a farmer. Sally reported his death. He is buried at Liberty Cemetery in Parksley, Accomack, VA. Buried with him are his wife Sallie who lived until 1904, and their son Isaiah who died in 1895.
