Coleman Doggett

Coleman Doggett is recognized as a Revolutionay War Patriot for providing supplies to the army.

Coleman Doggett was born February 17th, 1736 in Lancaster to William Doggett and Joanna Wale. He was the great-grandson of Rev. Benjamin Doggett who immigrated to Virgina from England around 1669 and preached at Christ Church in Lancaster County and later founded St. Mary's Whitechapel. According to Chester Horton Brent, Joanna Wale was William Doggett's second wife and his first wife is unknown.

Coleman married Mary King before 1758. She was the daughter of John King who died in 1752. They had six children together.

Coleman is recognized as Revolutionary War Patriot for providing supplies to the army during the war. Two separate entries in the Lancaster county record books show him providing brandy and other provisions.

Coleman's will was written February 2nd, 1782. He died soon after and the will was proven on February 21st. An appraisal was made on February 27th by James Gordon, John Yerby and Thad McCarty. Sixteen slaves were listed by name plus two slave children who where not named. Interesting items included a broad sword, two horses, two colts and a collection of carpentry tools including a claw hammer, a draw knife, a hand saw, augers and chisels. Also listed on the inventory was a cotton gin, cotton tubs and a quantity of picked cotton.

At the March 1782 court meeting it was ordered that the estate of Coleman Doggett be divided between his widow and children. During the April court an accounting of the division of the estate was returned. Mary his widow received a portion of the estate valued at 217 pounds and children Molley, William, Dennis and Priscilla received inheritances valued at 146 pounds. Oldest son John Doggett received a portion valued at only 117 pounds, but he also was given land holdings in Coleman's will. Priscilla Doggett received slaves named Jack, Stepany and Daniel. She also inherited four cows, two calves, a colt, a cart, bed sheets and other household items.
