Alice Gilbert was born about 1666 in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County to James Gilbert and Mary Smoote. About 1682 she married to John Chinn. She was John's second wife and more than 20 years younger than him. They had three children together. John died before May 13th, 1692 at about age 50. In his will he left his riding horse "Dragon" and her riding horse "Hester" to Alice along with other items.

Alice remarried to John Stretchley very soon after her first husband's death. Stretchley was the clerk of Lancaster County and was the one who had recorded Alice's first husband's will. Alice and John Stretchley did not have any children. Stretchley died at about age 32 and his will was probated December 14th, 1698 in Lancaster County.

Alice became ill soon after her second husband's death and wrote a will on August 29th, 1701. In the will she referred to herself as being "sick and weak of body and sound and perfect in mind and memory." Alice left items of cloth and clothing to two sisters and a cousin. To one of the sisters she left "one Christian servant named Anne Buckley." Alice also named her three children by John Chinn in her will. She divided silver tableware, furniture, clothing and livestock between her two daughter. Daughter Catherine also received "one negro woman named Sue of short stature and one negro man named Jack." Her son Rawleigh Chinn received the remainder of her estate including "all my slaves, servants, cattle, sheep, hogs, horses and mares and all and singular the rest residue and remainder of my said estate of what nature or quality soever or wheresoever."

Alice's will was proven on October 8th, 1701 in Lancaster County.
