Alice Columbia Jett

Alice came with her parents from King George to Lancaster. Both of her husbands died soon after marriage. She built the George Homeplace.

Alice Columbia Jett was born May 18, 1862 in King George, VA to John Lorenza Jett and Alice Columbia Jones. She was one of twelve siblings.

On the 1870 census she appears living with her parents in the Chotank township of King George county, in the Edge Hill post office area. There are no school attendance marks on the entire census page. Her father is listed as farmer.

The 1880 census places her, still living with her parents, in the Shiloh magisterial district of King George county. At age 17 her occupation is listed as 'At Home.' Her father is still listed as a farmer.

She married Luther Harrison George on May 18, 1885 in King George county. Luther had purchased a lot on Carter's Creek in Irvington, Lancaster County, VA the month before they married. She had two sons, Lloyd Harrison in 1886 and Gordon Douglas in 1888. Luther was a waterman. Luther passed away at age 37 on September 25, of 1890 from malarial fever. Luther is buried at Irvington Baptist Church, and is said to be the first person buried there.

Alice remarried to William Whitfield Pasquith. They were married in Lancaster County on November 25th, 1896 by Rev. F.W. Claybrook. Mr. Pasquith was a recent widower himself and recently appointed postmaster of Lynhams in Northumberland County. Alice was soon a widow again when her husband passed away January 15th, 1900, he was 55.

The 1900 census places Alice and her sons in the Wicomico township of Northumberland County. She is the head of the household and listed as a farmer. Lloyd and Gordon as listed as having attended school in the past year.

The Lancaster County Deed Book shows that she sold the land in Irvington in June of 1902 for $550. In 1909 Alice had the George Home-place built near the Lynhams Post Office.


The 1910 and 1920 census show her at the same home in Northumberland on Bluff Point Road across from the Lynhams Post Office. In 1910 she was listed as a farmer again, in 1920 her occupation was listed as none.

Alice passed away on November 27th, 1921. According to her death certificate a brain tumor had afflicted her for the previous two years. She was laid to rest on November 29th in Morattico Baptist Church cemetery. She was 59.
